Vietnam – number one outsourcing destination
Well, I said a few months ago that Vietnam was the most attractive outsourcing location in South East Asia. A number of people, most with a vested interest voiced an opposite opinion. Never-the-less I stand by my contention based on valid research by Pricewaterhousecoopers and the latest announcements just serve to reinforce my views. Harvey Nash will continue to increase their investment into our offshore software development centres in Hanoi and HCMC where we already have over 2,500 IT professionals. www.harveynash.com/software/
The new HCMC office now houses over 200 people after just eight weeks.
The world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industries which assembles gadgets from Apple Inc. iPods to Sony Corp. PlayStation 3 consoles and Nokia Corp. handsets, became the latest company to announce a high tech investment in Vietnam, with plans to spend a massive $5 billion over the next five years.
The huge investment shows that Vietnam has continued to increase its allure as a haven for IT investments. Last year Intel Corp. announced it would expand a chip packaging and testing project in Vietnam into a US$1 billion affair, more than triple the size of the original plan. Earlier this month, Taiwan’s Compal Electronics Inc., the world’s second largest laptop PC maker, revealed a plan to invest US$30 million in a factory in Vietnam. www.infoworld.com/article/07/08/30/Vietnam’s-IT-prowess-rises-with-5-billion-factory-plan_1.html
These deals will only serve to increase the experienced IT resource pool as the Vietnamese government continues to invest in education. The software industry is now helping to create work ready graduates through corporate universities. VINASA the Vietnam software association is leading this push with the aim of delivering 25,000 IT graduate a year by 2010.
